Unlocked vehicles targeted in rash of thefts

Members of the Miramichi Police Force are seeking the public's assistance in finding the person or persons responsible for a a rash of thefts from unlocked vehicles overnight between July 23-24 involving five vehicles parked in the Riverside Drive area and two vehicles parked on McGrath Crescent. The thief took small items from the vehicles, including a briefcase containing papers belonging to the publisher of the Miramichi Leader, who is offering a reward for their return. Anyone with any information about these thefts, or who saw or sees anyone who is acting suspiciously is asked to contact the police at 623-2124 or N.B. Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Accident leads police to stolen van

On July 23 at 6 a.m., members of the Miramichi Police Force, firemen and paramedics responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Curtis Corner and King George Highway near UPM. A 1997 Chevrolet van with two people in it and a 2007 Pontiac Torrent collided. After the accident, the van left the scene and the was later found abandoned in Eel Ground. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. With the aid of the K9 unit, Eel Ground Police and the RCMP, the two occupants of the van were apprehended. It was determined the vehicle had been stolen from the Richibucto area and the had been involved in the theft of gasoline earlier the same morning. Christopher David Paul, 24, appeared in court Wednesday and was charged with impaired driving, leaving the scene of a crime, theft of gas, possession of stolen property and breaching a judge's undertaking. He will remain in custody until his trial, set for Aug. 22. The passenger, a 21-year-old man was released from custody and will be returning to face court charges at a later date.
