Retirement Miramichi hosts tenants for annual meet and greet
Published Friday November 28th, 2008

Close to 200 Retirement Miramichi (RMI) residents attended the 11th annual meet and greet hosted by the community's board of directors and staff at the Miramichi Exhibition last Wednesday evening, Nov. 19. The annual event is an opportunity for the tenants to meet and socialize with the board and staff. Mayor Gerry Cormier and Board Chairman Plen Dickson addressed the gathering, which also included a number of city councillors.
Cormier thanked the residents for their decision to retire in Miramichi and their collective contribution to the city. In addition to the positive economic impact, their considerable contribution through volunteerism and service in local organizations, events and activities is immeasurable.
"The turnout was great, said Plen Dickson, chairman of the RMI board of directors. "We have 350 people living in the retirement community at this time, and nearly 200 were there." He added that occupancy is at an all-time high, with 216 of 242 available units rented at present.
Retirement Miramichi is first and foremost an economic development initiative designed to enhance and strengthen the Miramichi economy by recruiting people from outside Miramichi to move to the area. The retirement community currently injects approximately $5.7 million annually to the local economy, of which 75 per cent is from new tenants to the Miramichi region.
