
Host Flyers lose pair of fast pitch games at championship

MIDGET SOFTBALL — Big innings proved costly for the host Miramichi Flyers at the Eastern Canadian midget boys fastpitch championship in Nelson on Friday.
Miramichi lost 11-7 to Shea Heights, N.L. Friday afternoon before suffering a 12-5 setback to East Hants, N.S. that night.
The Flyers now have an 0-3 record in the eight-team tournament.
Shea Heights used an eight-run first inning to beat Miramichi yesterday. Jeremy Doherty was the losing pitcher. He also hit a home run and a single for the Flyers.
East Hants scored seven runs in the second inning en route to the win over Miramichi Friday night. Travis Arsenault took the loss on the mound and Robert Francis hit a home run in a losing effort.
In other Friday games, West Hants, N.S. defeated P.E.I. 6-1; Brookfield, N.S. blanked Wiarton, Ont. 7-0; Sydenham, Ont. clubbed East Hants 10-4; Brookfield edged P.E.I. 8-7; Sydenham blasted Shea Heights 16-0; and West Hants shut out Wiarton 3-0.
Miramichi was to play Sydenham Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Gerald King Field in its final round robin game.
The playoff round began Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. at both the King and Merley Doyle fields and was to conclude with the championship game yesterday at the King Field.
At the Eastern Canadian peewee boys fastpitch championship in Fredericton on Friday, Bass River split a pair of games on opening day.
Bass River bounced back to edge North River, N.S. 5-4 after losing 17-0 to the Napanee, Ont. Express.
