JUNIOR A HOCKEY — The Miramichi Timberwolves’ first game of the 2008-09 season Maritime Junior A Hockey League will be their home open on Sept. 13.
The game begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Miramichi Civic Centre. Their opponents will be the Truro Bearcats.
After that, the T-Wolves are on the road for two games before returning to Miramichi for three straight games.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, they host the defending Kent Cup champion Yarmouth Mariners. On Wednesday, Sept. 24, the Dieppe Commandos are in town, and on Sept. 27 the Bridgewater Lumberjacks are here.
All games begin at 7:30 p.m.
The MJAHL officially released its schedule Thursday as teams began to open training camp. The schedule had been delayed as the future of the Restigouche Tigers was up in the air after a group of local investors who run the city-owned team walked away. But the team will play this season and will host the T-Wolves in a pre-season exhibition game Sept. 5 in Campbellton.
The Timberwolves hit the ice at the Miramichi Civic Centre Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. for a pre-season game, as the Summerside Western Capitals will be in town, and then again on Sept. 8 to wrap up their pre-season schedule with a game against the Tigers. That contest begins a half hour earlier than normal, with the puck drop at 7 p.m.
The season itself begins Sept. 11 with the Fred Page Cup champion Pictou County Weeks Crushers hosting the Amherst Ramblers.
A major change to the schedule for the upcoming season is in the number of games each team will play. Instead of the 58 played last year, teams this season will play 54.
Meanwhile, the MJAHL Showcase will be held in at the Summerside Wellness Centre in Summerside, P.E.I. Oct. 10-12.
The third annual event will see all clubs play over three days with all games counting towards the overall standings.
A printed version of the schedule will be available in coming weeks at all MJAHL venues.
