BANTAM BASEBALL — The Fredericton Royals routed the Chatham Ironmen 14-3 to capture the New Brunswick bantam AAA baseball championship Sunday in Saint John.

Corey Wood tossed a two-hitter over five innings in the mercy-shortened contest. He struck out 10 and walked only one.

Brett Young led the Royals offensively with a solo home run, a double, a single and three runs scored. Brandon Legacy slapped three singles, scored twice and drove in a run while Wood helped his own cause with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Travis Harris added two singles, two ribbies and scored two runs. Chatham starter Nigel Augustine gave up five hits and four runs over four innings. The Royals broke the game wide open against relievers Jeremy MacDonald and Cody Dickson to avenge Saturday's 10-9 round-robin loss to the Ironmen.

Cody Dickson led the Ironmen with a grand slam in the top of the seventh and a triple. Brett Malone added a two-run homer and a single while Jordan Cripps singled twice.

Augustine got the win in relief of starter Ray Russell, scattering four hits over four shutout innings.

Brady Oxford doubled and scored two runs for the Royals. Fredericton and Chatham both went 2-1 in round-robin play while the Moncton Cubs and Saint John Cardinals were 1-2. The Cards posted a 4-2 record to finish the Canadian bantam baseball championship in seventh place two weeks ago. The team could have made it to the final had it not been for an upset 6-5 loss to Moncton late Saturday. Moncton had already been eliminated from finals contention.

"We just couldn't get it going after the nationals," Cardinals coach Tom Galbraith said Sunday. "We were flat all weekend."

The Royals opened with an 8-5 win over Saint John on Friday. Harris gave up three runs, two earned, on four walks and an error in the first inning. Young allowed two hits and two runs over the next three innings before Morton came on to get the win, tossing two-hit ball over the next three frames.

Wood went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Morton went 2-for-5 with a home run and a double. Harris was 2-for-3 with and RBI double and Oxford went 2-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases.

For Saint John, Adam Clark and Matt Bursey combined on the loss, giving up 11 hits, walked six and striking out eight. Kyle Lewis doubled twice in three at bats for the Cards.

The Royals then beat Moncton 5-3 as Wood tossed two-hit ball over four innings, fanning four and walking four. Young came on for the win, surrendered two hits over three innings. He struck out two and didn't walk anyone.

Oxford was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored; Wood 2-for-3 with three ribbies; Morton 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Young 1-for-4 with a run-scoring double.

Cubs starter Tyler Walchuck gave up eight hits and four runs over six and a third innings. He walked two and didn't strike out anyone. Colin Augustine, who had a double for Moncton, surrendered two hits and a run in relief.
